Different training methods have been used over the years in training dogs. The most common two are operant conditioning (positive reinforcement) and compulsive training (negative reinforcement)
While both training methods work, there are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Positive reinforcement builds confidence by showing the dog what to do and rewarding it instead of forcing it, this makes learning fun. The disadvantage to positive reinforcement is it can create a dog that depends on rewards and will not perform without it, or will only perform if wants to not when it has to (Chasing the squirrel is better than what you are offering as a reward.)
The advantage to negative reinforcement is that it teaches the dog to avoid behaviors that would be corrected. This teaches the dog to behave even though it may not want to. The disadvantage is that it can result in a dog that is submissive or timid, creating adverse behaviors and an unconfident dog.
Canine Resolution understands the advantages and disadvantages to both training methods.
Students are taught to use the following format
- Acquisition: Teaching the behavior by luring into position, capturing the behavior
- Automation: Adding name to command/position once dog anticipates or offers behavior
- Generalization: Practicing command in different places and scenarios, raising the bar to get the reward
- Maintenance: Complete understanding of the command using correction for deliberate disobedience
Students are taught to address behaviors using the following format
- Positive reinforcement of alternate behavior
- Management of the problem setting the dog up to succeed
- Consequence (primary consequence is correction)
Rewards can be anything that your dog may want that given moment. Praise, toys, food, attention, affection, space ect…Using higher value rewards for new behaviors/commands or for more challenging tasks. As the dog learns we raise the bar to earn the higher value reward.
Correction is only applied for deliberate disobedience once the dog understands the command/behavior. Corrections can be voice, leash and collar, body posture, taking space away ect…We do not permit yelling, hitting, kicking ect… Correction is never used if a dog is confused, showing fear or anxiety. It is applied with minimal extent to get the desired response.
The end result is a well balanced dog that has the confidence and accepts the owner’s authority. These training techniques work with your pet’s natural motivation of wanting to please and be loved. Your dog will enjoy the time you spend together while he reaps the benefits of gaining a better self concept.
